Degree Options

Important Information about AAS Degrees, Diplomas, and Certificates

Your choice whether to earn a certificate, diploma or AAS degree involves many factors and is very important. Selecting the option that is right for you before you register for your first classes will save you time and money—making your educational and career experiences more enjoyable.

  • Certificates - The most basic program completion option, and requires successful completion of the fewest credits. Includes limited general studies courses.

  • Diplomas - Includes extensive technical coursework to help you develop job skills. Includes some general studies courses.

  • AAS Degrees - Includes extensive technical coursework to help you develop job skills. Also includes extensive general education coursework in English, Speech, Humanities, Social/Behavioral Sciences, Math/Natural Science. This option is frequently chosen by individuals who have previously earned credits at a university or community college, or who are interested in eventually earning a bachelors degree.

Your choice will affect:
  • Credit and course transfer to and from other colleges.

  • Cost of your program and length of time necessary for completion.

  • Possible requirement to successfully complete developmental coursework for persons earning low scores on the Basic Academic Skills Assessment Test.

  • Employment options.

  • For individuals who have attended college previously—how your completed college courses will apply to your program.

  • Priority registration and eligibility for enrollment in SCSU classes.

Before you make your choice, please be aware of the following:
  • Normally, General Studies do not equal General Education. For example our General Studies English course will not transfer to St. Cloud State University as English Composition (English 191).

  • At the discretion of the receiving institution and program, they may accept up to 24 quarter credits as "University Electives".

If you have questions about this, please schedule an appointment to see a counselor 320-308-5089 or 1-800-222-1009 or your program advisor.
