Career Planning
Making a career decision can be accomplished with help from professional counselors. The following steps require some time and effort. Everything of importance usually does.
Start with... good look at yourself.
Assessment instruments may help you learn more about your interests, personality preferences, and basic abilities.
- Ask about the CAI, Career Assessment Inventory, if you’d like to measure career interests. Fee charged.
- Ask about the ACCUPLACER/CPTS. This test measures reading, writing, and math levels. It is free. All our students entering programs are required to take this test, unless exempted.
- Try the computerized career exploration programs such as ACT Discover. It includes self-assessments of interests and values at no cost to you. Internet websites also have helpful activities and information.
Continue with…a visit to a counselor.
Bring the results of the tests and inventories to an appointment with one of our licensed counselors. We will help you develop a list of possible career choices that will lead you to want to learn more. Help in planning your education is included in your visit with the counselor. Completion of assessment testing is not required to meet with a counselor.
Proceed with...learning about careers.
Career research can involve reading and/or using our computer resources. The college library has Vocational Biographies, the Occupational Outlook Handbook and other books to help give you information about the day-to-day activities of a variety of occupations.
The Minnesota Career Information System (MCIS), is computer software available in our library, Non-Traditional Center and Career Center. It contains occupational information, school and scholarship information and a short self-assessment called QUEST.
